My Travels in Australia

Back in King's Park

Postgraduate students are required to do seminars (which we all have to attend as much as possible) to propose their research, and often do them with some preliminary results...it's pretty much a way of getting feedback about the project easily. A lot of professors or visiting faculty also present during the seminar times when postgraduate students aren't (for example, last week we had a visiting research fellow from Sweden talk about sea weed farming and environmental impacts). It's actually a really cool way to learn about different areas. On top of those ones there are also weekly King's Park Seminars that are optional, but I headed down today, because I was planning to be at my research site near Perth that afternoon anyway. These are seminars put on my people from various WA schools. So this is the Lotterywest Federation Walkway Bridge in King's Park! It's sort of a tree-top walkway over a ravine where you walk in the canopy. It's actually kind of daunting for someone whose not that big of a fan of heights! Maybe it would be easier without the glass walls on the sides? In any event, it probably doesn't compare with the tree-top walkway in the Valley of the Giants, which I've been told is a might-see site before I leave (those trees are some of the biggest in Australia).

I may have somewhat of a part-time job soon. The government here has contacted our school about writing a report about constructed wetlands in WA, and it basically completely fits with my research, so I might be working with my professor to pput that report together (since there's no point two people pretty much synthesizing the exact same information over and over). It would be an easy way to make money over here, and I'm sure it would help in terms of getting advice/resources from the government for my own project!

This last picture is of the old Swan Brewery building from King's Park, which is right on the Swan River. It's not there anymore, but I think the building still gives tours and such.
