My Travels in Australia

Successful Shopping

Well, yesterday and today I headed out to do some shopping, because even though I brought clothes for cool weather, I didn't have room for tonnes of them (as you know they take up more space in a luggage). I decided the best thing to do would be to head into the Hay & Murray Street Malls in Perth, which are basically two blocks of road that are closed to traffic and converted into a big open-air mall. The actual city centre of Perth doesn't seem to have what we would consider a "mall" back home, although there are some of those in the suburbs (like Joondalup), but Hay and Murray Streets are basically the shopping centre in the city. The two streets run parallel, and then there are a bunch of "plazas" or "arcades" that connect the two malls. One of them, the London Court, connects the Hay Street Mall and St. George's Terrace (which is a main city road with access to the Supreme Court gardens, etc.) and is designed as a replica of Elizabethan England. It has some really cool shops for Australian stuff like aboriginal art (painted boomerangs, etc.) and sheepskin (and opals...but I was told not to buy those...although it's all so expensive I'm not buying any of it right now haha).

I pretty much just got some warmer clothes, and I found a messenger bag (called a "caddy" here) that I've been looking for, because my backpack is pretty huge and this bag pretty much perfectly fits my computer and notebook, which I all I ever really need to carry. So it was an overall success, and I've learned some more of downtown Perth, which is always helpful.

Tomorrow I'm heading to Fremantle for part of the West Coast Blues & Roots Festival. The acts tomorrow include Ben Harper and John Mayer. I was originally going today for Dave Matthews Band as well, but they had to cancel the Australian portion of their tour. So I'm excited about heading down tomorrow for bands that I know, and probably to learn about some Australian bands too!

So Freo tomorrow (if you call it Fremantle, you are guaranteed to be recognized as someone not from WA)!
