My Travels in Australia

Field Trip

This is Joondalup Central Park.

I'm taking a field trip to my study site in Gwelup tomorrow, because I need to go over the whole site and make sure water doesn't come from anywhere other than rain and the ground (i.e. no companies have decided to build little drains emptying into any channels or wetlands). It'll be my first attempt to get there myself using the train/bus, but it doesn't look too difficult.

Apparently that Florida boat license actually comes in handy too. We're all supposed to take a one-day course in handling a boat, but I didn't really want to take a day to learn how to handle a 15 ft dinghy-type boat, especially knowing I'll never be using the boat when I'm here (I'm not sure why everyone is supposed to take it, but apparently we are). As it turns out, having the boat license from Florida meant that I didn't have to take the course (I didn't mention that it was online and that I didn't actually fill in a lot of the questions haha). Who knew that little card could actually be useful (other than in the avoidance of tickets in Florida)?

I also learned today that I'll be putting upwards of $14,000 worth of equipment in the field for my experiment. So now I'm figuring out ways to make sure it's somewhat secure. I think we're going to canvas the neighbourhood and try to put a couple of the things beside people's houses or something (like rain gauges that don't need to actually be in the wetland).

Other than that, this week's mostly been reading and/or writing and trying to get my proposal further along. You have up to 6 months to get a proposal submitted and present your proposal seminar, but I need to be able to start the field work in June when rain starts (or when groundwater comes up, because it's cooler and people stop using their groundwater bores for sprinklers), so I'm working a little faster to get this part completed.
