My Travels in Australia

It's Getting Chilly

Daylight saving time ended so I believe I'm now exactly 12 hours ahead of Toronto-time. It's nice becuase it actually gets dark before 9 at night.

Today probably the most rain I've seen since I've been here. It was "pouring" although that seemed more like heavy mist combined with large "sheets" of rain. It's definitely not like Florida in terms of pouring...although I guess it's similar in that you get large bursts of rain and lots of light rain (although it doesn't disappear in five minutes). The summer's also ending. It's about 9 degrees right now (I'm at night). This might sound nice to those of you who have been in winter, but since Sunday afternoon it's dropped from 40 degrees, and a 30 degree temperature drop makes 9 degrees feel really cold (I'm definitely realizing that temperature is incredibly relative). It makes me realize why temperature is always thought to be a relatively bad measurement in terms of research projects - I mean, in terms of not accounting for the change in temperature versus just the temperature or whatever - some projects obviously use temperature really well.

I'm slowly winning my battle with disabling Microsofts auto-correct features. It feels like they keep adding more and more in their stupid automatic updates. Why is everything so automatic? I keep myself entertained with my two computer screens though. We have a "health and safety" thing in our school, and if we're using our own laptops they have to get plugged into larger monitors, etc. when we're in the offices and then we use real keyboards and a real mouse, etc. It's mostly because apparently laptop screen are too low, and laptop keyboards aren't good for you, etc. (it's the same policy that gets used for the people who spend all day using a computer everyday). At first I thought it was weird. But it's actually really helpful. Plus if you have a decent graphics card, you can tell your computer to basically use both, so I can move windows over onto the big computer screen to work, but leave files I'm reading for research or whatever on the other. Honestly, I don't know how I will write a research report without two screens anymore haha (you know...other than printing out the papers I'm reading). I'm actually collecting quite a big library of PDF journal articles (around 200 articles so far). A tonne of the stormwater articles I've been reading have actually been focused on remediating stormwater in the Everglades!

I realized today that part of why I picked ECU was that it would have a project that was different from what I wanted but really interesting. As it turns out, the project has kind of swung around and encompassed both things, so I'm ending up studying the area I was originally interested in, combined with the area that I thought sounded interesting to learn about, which has been cool. I didn't know anything about these soils before I got here, and I'm learning they are a huge problem all over the place!
