The trains were all delayed today because of speed restrictions due to heat. At noon today in Joondalup it was about 42 Celcius, plus about 30% humidity, plus a UV index of around 12. It was hot. We were going to go out to a field site and help plant stuff in a wetland, but they cancelled it because they didn't want people getting burnt. Apparently the trains have to slow down to avoid putting too much pressure on the track when it's so hot - and they have inspectors out watching the tracks, because they get so hot when the temperature and UV is so high that they are more easily damaged. It's actually kind of weird. It's like everything disappeared. The birds don't seem to be around, the huge lines of ants have vanished from the sidewalks (probably because they'd get cooked in the sun!). There's also a big fire threat index now, and apparently the one that caused all the smoke and smell was actually only about 1-2 kilometres away! They just hadn't updated the map site that night. But it was being watched. Anyways, 27 degrees tonight will feel nice haha.
This is Lake Joondalup. It apparently used to look like a lake. It's not easy to see, because there's no real look-out on the lake or anything that I could fine (I think they're putting one in though), but it's pretty much dried up. It should get some water again when we get more rain in the winter. In contrast, Cyclone George is flooding the Northern Territory like crazy - we got pictures from a research station...they have had almost 870 mm of rain in the past week...Perth has an average of 670 mm of rain ALL YEAR...Toronto's average annual rainfall is about 820 mm from what we found when we were trying to compare...it's really flooded. There are pigs and stuff stranded on bridges, and they think it will be weeks before the water goes down. People have launched their boats off of the roads, and apparently someone ran into a tree by accident and had random animals fall out of the tree and into the boat! I would think the last thing you want up there are random animals like snakes falling into your boat.
