My Travels in Australia

Visiting Fremantle and the Ocean

Today is my last day in Perth before heading to my campus, so I decided I had a little more exploring to do. I caught one of the high-speed trains to Fremantle (aka Freo) and checked out the city and some of its tourist spots. The main place I visited was the Arthur Head Reserve, the original landing point of settlers coming to Western Australia. This is a picture of the Arthur Head roundhouse and signal mast. The roundhouse was the first community building built in the area, and was used as the jail before the Fremantle Jail was eventually built. The mast was used to signal incoming ships, etc., since the area was used extensively for whaling, as well as exporting goods from quarries. The water in the Indian Ocean was nice and warm (about twenty degrees)...I decided I had to at least get my feet wet when I was that close to the beach.

I'm starting to get the last of my things organized into my bags again. I'm walking them to a hotel about five minutes down the road and meeting a bus that is shuttling students to and from Perth to the campus and student village. I'll update more tomorrow when I'm getting settled in to Joondalup!
