My Travels in Australia

Joondalup

I made my way to Joondalup (my campus) today, which took about 25 minutes each direction on high-speed train. The public transportation system here is really good. In the main part of the city they have CAT (Central Area Transit) buses that are free and take you along extensive bus routes within the city. They take you to stations on the outskirts of the city so that you can enter "paying" areas. Instead of tokens, etc., once I have my student card I will have a SmartRider chip (inside the card) that gets scanned as you enter a bus/ferry/train and as you leave, and charges you based on how many zones you travel through. As a student, you are only charged $0.50 per use (and you have 1 hour to get on another form of transit and have it considered a transfer versus a new ride).

Once I got to Joondalup, I noticed there were parrots everywhere! They look somewhat Squirt-like, except they are definitely bigger. This is an Australian Ringneck, and someone I ran into at the campus says they are all over the place! I decided to look them up online, and as it turns out the rainbow lorikeet (Squirt) is actually an introduced species in Australia, and they compete with this parrot for nesting space so the Australian government actually sends workers to remove the lorikeets from the environment and place them in zoos (since they are endangered, they just remove them). So I have a feeling there won't be many Squirt sightings...but these parrots look similar.

I checked out the campus (which was pretty empty, since it's actually Saturday here), and then walked through the Joondalup Central Park on the way back to the train station.

This is the building where I'm going to be doing most of my work.

This is the equivalent of the University Centre at Guelph.

The beams that look sort of metallic are actually wooden!
