My Travels in Australia

Footy!

Well I've been busy lately! I presented my research proposal to the school about two weeks ago, and I think it went really well. The questions were probably the hardest part, but I think it went well!

Since then I've been focused on my research, because my equipment's in the field and I'm out there pretty much every day. There've been some little problems just getting used to using the equipment, but I've been told that's pretty normal. Mostly little things like figuring out how long batteries will last before I switch them out for recharging, and figuring out the flow rate of water to properly program the automated equipment. The batteries are the hardest, because the programs do give battery information, but the programs assume you're using alkaline batteries with assumed amp-hour ratings, etc., and my batteries aren't alkaline and have much higher amp-hour ratings, so I've had to go trail and error for a bit, but I think I've got my timing down now.

In terms of other stuff, on Saturday I went to the West Coast Eagles AFL (Australian Football League) game in Subiaco with a few other research students - Subiaco is just a few minutes west of Perth by train. "Footy" or Australian rules football is kind of like a cross between rugby, handball and Canadian/American football. The rules are part of the explanation in that previous link, but you get points by kicking between uprights - through the middle uprights for 6 points, or through the outer uprights for 1 point. It's actually a really exciting and fast paced game. The Eagles were playing the Sydney Swans and the two teams are rivals. So the stadium was packed. It was also the return of one of the main West Coast players after about a 4 months out with an injury, etc. He was a main player, and after not playing for four months had the highest number of successful passes of any player in the game! The Eagles won and it was a great game!

Anyways, we've had quite a bit of rain in the last couple of days. I've got some really good data for my project, and now I'm just getting prepared to analyse it all.

Until next time!
