My Travels in Australia

Long Time, No Post!

Sorry for the delay...I've been pretty busy!

I officially finished my first semester down under last week (since I don't have exams or anything)! Undergrads have about a month-long break until the next semester once they're done their exams. For me, I'm not sure that finishing the semester is much of a relief, because it mostly means I have even more stuff to do to get my research set-up. Although, it's way more fun doing stuff for something you actually really want to be doing (instead of doing assignments about statistics and things, which are important, but aren't as exciting). I've been getting all of my equipment ready to go out in the field. Everything works now except one automatic sampling unit, but the diode that has to be replaced should be in this week. I think most of the equipment will get put out next week and the research part will officially begin. I'm presenting my proposal seminar at the beginning of July, but I'm able to collect some data before that.

I'm also in the process of apartment hunting, although I haven't had much time to actually look lately. I'm going to set aside time to visit places this week as well, because I only have about 3 weeks left in residence (although, in an emergency I can stay here in the inter-semester break somewhere I'm sure).

It seems winter causes a lack of things like spiders and snakes. I have seen the odd daddy-long-legs type spider, but none of the bigger ones. And I haven't seen any snakes for about a month (including when we were crawling around the wetland figuring out where to install some of my stuff). I'm not complaining...I just didn't really expect everything to disappear. But I guess that makes sense, since I'm sure winter here feels cold to animals based on how hot the summer is.

Well, that's all for now. I've mostly been really focused on getting my research started lately, but once it's all in and working I'll be able to do a little more exploring! :)
