Cory and Sune's Visit and Researching!

Wow. Last time I said I would try to post more often, but I guess I failed. Personally I blame the enjoyable experiences I've been having with Cory and Sune (my brother and cousin for those of you possibly confused) while they've been visiting! We've done all sorts of tourist-like things, and last weekend visited Rottnest Island. Rottnest is home to a huge population of quokkas which seemingly resemble large rats. In fact, Rottnest is was adapted from the Dutch word for "rat nest", which they used to describe and/or name the island when they first visited. The island was also used as a main defensive site during World War II to protect Fremantle. Fremantle was basically like Pearl Harbour (in fact, only 10 fewer submarines). In order to protect Fremantle two 9.2" guns were installed that could accurately hit targets within about 28 km! Check out some pictures here.
This weekend we're headed to a wildlife reserve to get some awesome pictures with kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, etc.!
I also installed all of my equipment for my project today. If you remember my last research picture, these pictures below should be amusing. We also ran into a tiger snake in the grass, and my professor pointed it out so I'd know what to look for (they are the common snake around wetlands here). He also mentioned that the description such as "aggressive" is somewhat untrue. Like all animals, they are when they are cornered, but he said he's almost stepped on them before and had them scurry off when they can. Anyways, as you'll see, the water was much higher than it used to be after the week or so of rain we've had!
I present my research proposal on Tuesday between 12-12:30 (20 minute presentation + 10 minutes question/answer), as you would find conveniently advertised on our research centre's website or throughout various schools in Western Australia. For the most part anyone's welcome, but typically it's basically the professors and postgraduate students from my school within my university plus the Dean of Graduate Studies here. It'll be nice to have it done, but I'm busy polishing my PowerPoint slides and preparing. I've got a lot of it relatively memorized and/or I've been researching this stuff for about 5 months now and feel like I just know it, so I'm not overly worried. I'm doing a mock run-through with some of the other MSc students so that they can ask any questions or give me some advice about stuff I should just clarify to avoid questions next week on Friday.
Well, I'm off to work a little more on my PowerPoint slides, and then a busy day tomorrow checking out my equipment and making sure it's all working properly and other little things! :)
